Highlights

Sampling across large-scale geological gradients to study geosphere-biosphere interactions

In this paper we lay out the approach we have been using to study geo-bio interactions across large spatial scales. We had a lot of requests over the past years to discuss how we are approaching sampling the subsurface from the surface, and this short contribution explains it all. We define a class of features called Deeply-Sourced Seeps (DSS) that encompasses hot springs, fumaroles, deep chloride springs, etc… DSS have a deep (meaning not surface) source for the volatiles, and might be used as a window into the subsurface and into deep geo processes. Using this definition as a starting point, we have abandoned the classic ecological BACI approach and the surface transects sampled across a single spring in favour of a single point sampling for each seeps repeated over hundreds of km to sample geological-scale gradients. This approach has been already successfully applied in a number of our recent papers, and many more to come.

Bacterioplankton Diversity and Distribution in Relation to Phytoplankton Community Structure in the Ross Sea Surface Waters

In this paper we analyze the bacterial community structure in the Ross Sea and correlate it with the phytoplankton diversity. We use some neat network analysis and multivariate analysis tolls to investigate the diversity variations along the phytoplankton ecological gradient.

Plate tectonics drive deep biosphere microbial community structure

We show that the subsurface ecosystem in the convergent margin of Costa Rica is composed by a diverse community of chemolithoautotrophs responding coesively to changes in the geometry and geology of the subduction zone. We further show that the community feeds of CO2 released from the subducting slab and it is able to sequester a large amount of CO2 preventing it from reaching the atmosphere.

Forearc carbon sink reduces long-term volatile recycling into the mantle

We have demonstrated that a previously uinrecognized microbial sink is trapping substantial amounts of deep carbon in the forearc instead of escaping through volcanoes or sinking into Earth’s interior

Living at the Extremes: Extremophiles and the Limits of Life in a Planetary Context

We compiled the current knowledge on the limit of life and tried to place it in planetary context, looking at what we might learn from Earth based life while searching for life on other planetary bodies.
